Residual momentum
Momentum computed on the part of each stock’s return that the market does not explain. Removing factor exposure makes the signal less prone to crashes when the market turns.
Note. Uses one factor, the equal-weighted market, instead of the three Fama–French factors.
Edit anything; the result updates as you type. Lines like window = 20 become sliders.

Residual momentum (3.7)
Momentum computed on the part of each stock’s return that the market does not explain. Removing factor exposure makes the signal less prone to crashes when the market turns.
Key equation
Lab formula
// Strip out the market, then take risk-adjusted momentum of the residual
mkt = market(returns)
beta = ts_beta(returns, mkt, 252)
resid = returns - beta * mkt
mean_resid = delay(ts_mean(resid, 231), 21)
vol_resid = delay(stddev(resid, 231), 21)
mean_resid / vol_residUses one factor, the equal-weighted market, instead of the three Fama–French factors.
How the backtest works
The formula is evaluated for every asset on every day. Its values become positions at that day’s close, using the portfolio rule you pick, and earn the next day’s close-to-close return. Costs are charged in basis points on the amount traded. Everything runs in your browser on daily data from Yahoo Finance, adjusted for splits and dividends.
