Computing the Ito integral of w against itself

Question

For a standard Brownian motion ww, evaluate ∫0Tw(t) dw(t)\int_0^T w(t)\,dw(t) in closed form and describe the properties of the resulting random variable.

Short answer

12(w(T)2−T)\tfrac12\big(w(T)^2-T\big). Ito's lemma on w2w^2 gives d(w2)=2w dw+dtd(w^2)=2w\,dw+dt; the extra −T-T is the Ito correction that ordinary calculus misses. The result has mean 00 and variance T2/2T^2/2, is a martingale in TT, and is distributed as T2(χ12−1)\tfrac T2(\chi^2_1-1), so it is skewed and bounded below by −T/2-T/2.
