Covariance between a chi-square and a scaled normal

Question

Let Z∼N(0,1)Z\sim N(0,1) be independent of Y∼χν2Y\sim\chi^2_\nu, and set W=Z/YW=Z/\sqrt{Y}. Find Cov⁡(Y,W)\operatorname{Cov}(Y,W).

Short answer

00. By independence, E[YW]=E[Y] E[Z]=0\mathbb{E}[YW]=\mathbb{E}[\sqrt Y]\,\mathbb{E}[Z]=0 and E[W]=E[Y−1/2] E[Z]=0\mathbb{E}[W]=\mathbb{E}[Y^{-1/2}]\,\mathbb{E}[Z]=0 (finite for ν>1\nu>1), so the covariance vanishes, even though YY and WW are not independent.
