Dominoes on a board missing opposite corners

Question

Two diagonally opposite corner squares are removed from an 8×88\times8 chessboard, leaving 6262 squares. Can the remainder be covered exactly by 3131 dominoes, each covering two adjacent squares?

Short answer

No. Opposite corners have the same colour, so the board is left with 3232 squares of one colour and 3030 of the other. Every domino covers one light and one dark square, so 3131 dominoes would need 3131 of each.
