Explicit solution of the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck equation

Question

Solve the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck SDE dXt=θ(μ−Xt) dt+σ dWtdX_t=\theta(\mu-X_t)\,dt+\sigma\,dW_t with θ>0\theta>0 and starting value X0X_0, and describe the law of XtX_t.

Short answer

Xt=μ+(X0−μ)e−θt+σ∫0te−θ(t−s)dWsX_t=\mu+(X_0-\mu)e^{-\theta t}+\sigma\int_0^te^{-\theta(t-s)}dW_s. Multiply by the integrating factor eθte^{\theta t}; then d(eθtXt)=θμeθtdt+σeθtdWtd(e^{\theta t}X_t)=\theta\mu e^{\theta t}dt+\sigma e^{\theta t}dW_t and integrate. XtX_t is Gaussian with mean μ+(X0−μ)e−θt\mu+(X_0-\mu)e^{-\theta t} and variance σ22θ(1−e−2θt)\tfrac{\sigma^2}{2\theta}(1-e^{-2\theta t}), tending to N(μ,σ2/2θ)N(\mu,\sigma^2/2\theta).
