Expected product of Brownian motion at two times

Question

For a standard Brownian motion WW and times s,t≥0s,t\ge0, compute E[WsWt]\mathbb{E}[W_sW_t].

Short answer

min⁡(s,t)\min(s,t). Take s≤ts\le t and write Wt=Ws+(Wt−Ws)W_t=W_s+(W_t-W_s). The increment is independent of WsW_s with mean zero, so E[WsWt]=E[Ws2]=s\mathbb{E}[W_sW_t]=\mathbb{E}[W_s^2]=s.
