Variance of a product of independent variables

Question

Independent random variables XX and YY satisfy EX=4\mathbb{E}X=4, EX2=20\mathbb{E}X^2=20, EY=−3\mathbb{E}Y=-3 and EY2=45\mathbb{E}Y^2=45. What is Var⁡(XY)\operatorname{Var}(XY)?

Short answer

756756. Independence lets moments factor: E[X2Y2]=20⋅45=900\mathbb{E}[X^2Y^2]=20\cdot45=900 and E[XY]=−12\mathbb{E}[XY]=-12. So the variance is 900−144=756900-144=756.
