Correlation when standard deviations simply add

Question

Suppose σX=4\sigma_X=4, σY=7\sigma_Y=7 and the standard deviation of X+YX+Y is 1111. Find the correlation of XX and YY.

Short answer

11. From 121=16+49+2Cov⁡(X,Y)121=16+49+2\operatorname{Cov}(X,Y) we get Cov⁡=28=4⋅7\operatorname{Cov}=28=4\cdot7, so ρ=1\rho=1. Standard deviations add only under perfect positive correlation.
