Mean of two exponentials versus exponential of mean

Question

For real numbers aa and bb, prove that 12(ea+eb)≥e(a+b)/2\tfrac12\left(e^a+e^b\right)\ge e^{(a+b)/2}.

Short answer

The difference is a perfect square. With u=ea/2u=e^{a/2}, v=eb/2v=e^{b/2}, the left minus the right is 12(u2+v2)−uv=12(u−v)2≥0\tfrac12(u^2+v^2)-uv=\tfrac12(u-v)^2\ge0, with equality iff a=ba=b. This is AM-GM, or equivalently convexity of exe^x (Jensen).
