Binet formula for the Fibonacci numbers

Question

The Fibonacci numbers satisfy F0=0F_0=0, F1=1F_1=1 and Fn=Fn−1+Fn−2F_{n}=F_{n-1}+F_{n-2}. Find an explicit formula for FnF_n.

Short answer

Fn=φn−ψn5F_n=\dfrac{\varphi^n-\psi^n}{\sqrt5} with φ=1+52\varphi=\tfrac{1+\sqrt5}{2}, ψ=1−52\psi=\tfrac{1-\sqrt5}{2}. Try Fn=rnF_n=r^n: the recursion gives r2=r+1r^2=r+1, whose roots are φ,ψ\varphi,\psi. The general solution Aφn+BψnA\varphi^n+B\psi^n fitted to F0=0,F1=1F_0=0,F_1=1 gives A=−B=1/5A=-B=1/\sqrt5.
