Growth rate of the eigenvalue of a rank-one matrix

Question

For each nn, let xn=(1,2,…,n)Tx_n=(1,2,\dots,n)^T and An=xnxnTA_n=x_nx_n^T, an n×nn\times n matrix with exactly one non-zero eigenvalue λn\lambda_n. For which exponent kk does λn/nk\lambda_n/n^k tend to a finite, non-zero limit?

Short answer

k=3k=3. Anxn=xn(xnTxn)A_nx_n=x_n(x_n^Tx_n), so λn=∥xn∥2=∑j=1nj2=n(n+1)(2n+1)6∼n33\lambda_n=\|x_n\|^2=\sum_{j=1}^n j^2=\tfrac{n(n+1)(2n+1)}{6}\sim\tfrac{n^3}{3}, giving limit 13\tfrac13 when k=3k=3.
