Contradiction proof that root 2 is irrational

Question

Show that there are no integers p,qp,q with 2=p/q\sqrt2=p/q.

Short answer

Assume 2=p/q\sqrt2=p/q in lowest terms. Then p2=2q2p^2=2q^2, so p2p^2 and hence pp is even; write p=2mp=2m, giving q2=2m2q^2=2m^2, so qq is even too. Both being even contradicts lowest terms.
