Antiderivative of the secant function

Question

Compute the indefinite integral ∫sec⁡θ dθ\displaystyle\int\sec\theta\,d\theta.

Short answer

ln⁡∣sec⁡θ+tan⁡θ∣+C\ln|\sec\theta+\tan\theta|+C. Multiply top and bottom by sec⁡θ+tan⁡θ\sec\theta+\tan\theta: the integrand becomes sec⁡2θ+sec⁡θtan⁡θsec⁡θ+tan⁡θ\frac{\sec^2\theta+\sec\theta\tan\theta}{\sec\theta+\tan\theta}, whose numerator is exactly the derivative of the denominator.
