Mean of a standard normal given it is positive

Question

For X∼N(0,1)X\sim N(0,1), compute E[X∣X>0]\mathbb{E}[X\mid X>0].

Short answer

2/π≈0.798\sqrt{2/\pi}\approx0.798. E[X1X>0]=∫0∞x 12πe−x2/2dx=12π\mathbb{E}[X\mathbf 1_{X>0}]=\int_0^\infty x\,\tfrac{1}{\sqrt{2\pi}}e^{-x^2/2}dx=\tfrac{1}{\sqrt{2\pi}}, and dividing by P(X>0)=12\mathbb{P}(X>0)=\tfrac12 gives 2/π\sqrt{2/\pi}.
