Mean gap between two thirty-sided dice

Question

Two fair dice, each numbered 11 to 3030, are rolled independently, giving XX and YY. Compute E ∣X−Y∣\mathbb{E}\,|X-Y|.

Short answer

89990\tfrac{899}{90}. For k≥1k\ge1 there are 2(30−k)2(30-k) outcomes with ∣X−Y∣=k|X-Y|=k, so the mean is 1900∑k=1292k(30−k)=8990900\tfrac{1}{900}\sum_{k=1}^{29}2k(30-k)=\tfrac{8990}{900}. In general an nn-sided die gives n2−13n\tfrac{n^2-1}{3n}.
