First coin toss still ahead after ten tosses
Question
A fair coin is tossed times. Call a face ahead after tosses if it has come up in strictly more than half of those tosses. What is the probability that whichever face appeared on the very first toss is ahead once all tosses are done?
Short answer
. Say the first toss is heads. Heads is ahead after tosses exactly when the remaining tosses contain at least heads. With an odd number () of fair tosses, at least heads and at most heads are mirror images of each other, so each has probability .
