Expected tosses for the winner of a first-head race

Question

Two people each toss their own fair coin until they get a head. Let XX and YY be how many tosses each needs. Given that X<YX<Y (strictly), what is the expected value of XX?

Short answer

43\tfrac43. P(X=k, Y>k)=2−k⋅2−k=4−kP(X=k,\,Y>k)=2^{-k}\cdot2^{-k}=4^{-k}, so conditional on X<YX<Y, XX is geometric with success probability 34\tfrac34 (total probability 13\tfrac13). Its mean is 13/4=43\tfrac1{3/4}=\tfrac43.
