Correlation of sum and difference of linked variables

Question

Random variables XX and YY have correlation exactly 11, and the standard deviation of YY is smaller than that of XX. What is the correlation between X+YX+Y and X−YX-Y?

Short answer

11. Perfect correlation means Y=cX+dY=cX+d with c=σY/σX∈(0,1)c=\sigma_Y/\sigma_X\in(0,1). Then X+Y=(1+c)X+dX+Y=(1+c)X+d and X−Y=(1−c)X−dX-Y=(1-c)X-d are both increasing linear functions of XX, so they are perfectly positively correlated.
