Conditional ordering of three iid uniforms

Question

Let X1,…,X20X_1,\dots,X_{20} be independent Unif(0,1)\text{Unif}(0,1) random variables. Given that X10<X20X_{10}<X_{20}, what is the probability that X1>X10X_1>X_{10}?

Short answer

2/32/3. Both conditions together mean that, among the three variables with indices 11, 1010 and 2020, the tenth is the minimum; by exchangeability that has probability 13\tfrac13. Dividing by P(X10<X20)=12P(X_{10}<X_{20})=\tfrac12 gives 23\tfrac23.
