Clipped maximum equal to clipped minimum on a grid

Question

Integers xx and yy are each chosen independently and uniformly from {−10,−9,…,9,10}\{-10,-9,\dots,9,10\}. Find the probability that max⁡(0,x)=min⁡(0,y)\max(0,x)=\min(0,y).

Short answer

121441\tfrac{121}{441}. The left side is at least 00 and the right side is at most 00, so both must equal 00, which means x≤0x\le0 and y≥0y\ge0. Each has 1111 of 2121 possible values, giving (1121)2=121441\left(\tfrac{11}{21}\right)^2=\tfrac{121}{441}.
