Finishing position from distances to last and halfway

Question

In a race, a driver finished 1414 positions ahead of last place and 66 positions behind the last spot of the top half of the field. What position did he finish in?

Short answer

2626th. If he is in place xx, the field has x+14x+14 drivers and the top half ends at place x−6x-6. Setting x−6=x+142x-6=\tfrac{x+14}{2} gives x=26x=26 (a field of 4040).
