Extra workers needed to finish tilling plots

Question

A contractor must till 1111 equal plots. Four workers spend 55 hours finishing the first 22 plots. The remaining 99 plots must be done within the next 1212 hours. Assuming every worker tills at the same constant rate no matter how many are on site, what is the fewest extra workers the contractor must add?

Short answer

4. Two plots took 4×5=204\times5=20 worker-hours, so one worker tills 110\tfrac1{10} plot per hour. With 4+n4+n workers for 1212 hours we need 12(4+n)10≥9\tfrac{12(4+n)}{10}\ge9, i.e. n≥3.5n\ge3.5, so n=4n=4 (eight workers need 11.2511.25 hours).
