Comparing pi to the e with e to the pi

Question

Without a calculator, decide which number is bigger: πe\pi^e or eπe^\pi. Answer 11 if πe\pi^e is bigger and 22 if eπe^\pi is bigger.

Short answer

22 (eπe^\pi is larger). Taking logs and dividing by eπe\pi, compare ln⁡ee\tfrac{\ln e}{e} with ln⁡ππ\tfrac{\ln\pi}{\pi}. The function ln⁡xx\tfrac{\ln x}{x} peaks at x=ex=e, so ln⁡ee>ln⁡ππ\tfrac{\ln e}{e}>\tfrac{\ln \pi}{\pi}, i.e. eπ>πee^\pi>\pi^e.
