Overview

Every invertibility test built across Topic 4 — trivial kernel, full rank, nn pivots — is a structural condition, checked by running an algorithm (elimination) to completion. This short topic supplies the one test that is instead a single number: the determinant det⁡A\det A, which is nonzero exactly when AA is invertible, and whose magnitude has a clean geometric meaning as a volume scaling factor. The topic exists mainly to complete the invertibility chain with its last unproved link, and to build the one piece of machinery Stage 3 needs immediately: the characteristic polynomial det⁡(A−λI)\det(A-\lambda I) that defines an eigenvalue.

By the end of this topic you should be able to:

  • state the three defining properties of the determinant and derive the 2×22\times2 and 3×33\times3 formulas from them;
  • compute a determinant via cofactor expansion or via the product of pivots from an LULU factorisation;
  • interpret ∣det⁡A∣|\det A| as a volume scaling factor and use det⁡(AB)=det⁡(A)det⁡(B)\det(AB)=\det(A)\det(B);
  • apply Cramer's rule to solve a small system.
