Quant Researcher, Power Dispatch Modeling

A modelling role supporting a Stamford portfolio manager trading US power markets. You would build the dispatch model that simulates grid conditions and marginal prices.

What you’d work on

Our reading of the posting: what a new hire in this role would most likely spend their first months on.

  • Build a power dispatch model in Python using an optimisation solver
  • Tune model inputs and structure to reproduce historical grid behaviour
  • Cut forecast error and improve scenario analysis
  • Run the model regularly and keep outputs in an internal database
  • Present results and limits to the investment team

What they ask for

Required

  • Master's or PhD in operations research, electrical engineering or applied maths
  • 5+ years building dispatch models (SCUC/SCED)
  • Solver experience (Gurobi, CPLEX)
  • Power markets: dispatch, grid operations, LMP pricing
  • SQL and time-series databases
  • Python and Git

Preferred

  • Object-oriented language
  • ERCOT, PJM or CAISO knowledge
Education
Master's or PhD in operations research, electrical engineering, applied maths or a related quantitative field.
Experience
5+ years building power dispatch models with optimisation solvers.
Languages and tools
  • Python
  • SQL
  • Git
Markets

How to prepare

  • Formulate a small unit commitment problem as a mixed-integer program
  • Study locational marginal pricing and how ISO markets clear
  • Solve it in Python with an open-source or commercial solver
  • Compare model output to public ERCOT price data
