Risk and Resilience Engineer

MSCI seeks a modeller connecting climate hazards to losses on buildings and infrastructure. The role converts engineering evidence and imperfect data into financial estimates of damage, downtime and resilience benefits.

What you’d work on

Our reading of the posting: what a new hire in this role would most likely spend their first months on.

  • Calibrate damage and recovery models for multiple natural hazards.
  • Translate building exposures into repair-cost and downtime estimates.
  • Validate model predictions and quantify uncertainty.
  • Estimate how adaptation measures change expected losses.

What they ask for

Required

  • Structural or civil engineering knowledge
  • Catastrophe-loss modelling
  • Probability and statistics
  • Scientific programming
  • Model validation
  • Research communication

Preferred

  • Property-level loss-model development
  • Cloud or high-performance computing
Education
Master’s-level preparation with relevant experience, or a PhD, in an engineering or related quantitative subject; a PhD is preferred.
Experience
The master’s route specifies roughly three to five or more years of relevant experience.
Languages and tools
  • Python
  • Git
  • AWS
  • GCP
  • Azure

How to prepare

  • Build a vulnerability curve linking hazard intensity to damage.
  • Quantify uncertainty around simulated repair costs.
  • Validate a simple loss model against observed damage data.
