Machine Learning Researcher
A research role applying advanced machine learning to predict financial markets at G-Research's London headquarters. It leans on large datasets and heavy compute, with an academic style of working.
What you’d work on
Our reading of the posting: what a new hire in this role would most likely spend their first months on.
- Develop and test new ML models on large, clean financial datasets
- Adapt techniques from recent conference papers, or invent new ones, when standard methods fail
- Use fast feedback from measurable results to refine models
- Share findings with the research community inside the firm
What they ask for
Required
- Postgraduate ML degree or commercial experience building novel ML algorithms
- Deep learning, reinforcement learning, non-convex optimisation, Bayesian non-parametrics, NLP or approximate inference
- Strong mathematical reasoning
- Python with scikit-learn, SciPy, NumPy, pandas
Preferred
- Jupyter notebooks
- Object-oriented programming
- Publications at top ML conferences
- Strong Kaggle record
- Education
- Postgraduate degree in machine learning or related; exceptional competition records also considered
- Experience
- Postgraduate study or commercial experience developing novel ML algorithms
- Languages and tools
How to prepare
- Reproduce a recent paper from NeurIPS or ICML on a noisy time-series dataset
- Study why standard ML overfits financial data and how to validate properly
- Practise implementing models from scratch in PyTorch or NumPy
- Build a Kaggle-style project and write up what failed as well as what worked
What to study
- Financial Machine Learning
- Linear Algebra, Optimisation and Numerical Methods
- Probability, Statistics and Financial Data
- Python for Quantitative Finance
