Covariance of Brownian motion at times one and two

Question

For a standard Brownian motion WW, compute the covariance between W1W_1 and W2W_2.

Short answer

11. Write W2=W1+(W2−W1)W_2=W_1+(W_2-W_1), where the increment is independent of W1W_1 with mean zero. Then Cov⁡(W1,W2)=Var⁡(W1)=1\operatorname{Cov}(W_1,W_2)=\operatorname{Var}(W_1)=1; in general Cov⁡(Ws,Wt)=min⁡(s,t)\operatorname{Cov}(W_s,W_t)=\min(s,t).
