Median of the first 2023 integers and their squares

Question

Form a list containing the integers 1,2,…,20231,2,\dots,2023 together with the perfect squares 12,22,…,202321^2,2^2,\dots,2023^2 (so 40464046 entries, duplicates kept). Find the median of this list.

Short answer

1979.51979.5. The median is the average of the 2023rd and 2024th smallest entries. Entries at most 19791979 are the 19791979 integers plus the 4444 squares up to 442=193644^2=1936, i.e. exactly 20232023 entries; the next entry is 19801980. So the median is 1979+19802\tfrac{1979+1980}{2}.
