Mean of a Poisson with an exponential rate

Question

The rate λ\lambda is drawn from an exponential distribution with mean 11, and given λ\lambda, XX is Poisson with mean λ\lambda. What is E[X]\mathbb{E}[X]?

Short answer

11. By the tower rule, EX=E[E(X∣λ)]=Eλ=1\mathbb{E}X=\mathbb{E}[\mathbb{E}(X\mid\lambda)]=\mathbb{E}\lambda=1.
