Least-squares line through five upward points

Question

Five observations are (0,1)(0,1), (2,3)(2,3), (−1,0)(-1,0), (1,1)(1,1) and (−2,0)(-2,0), written as (x,y)(x,y). Fit a straight line by least squares and report the slope plus the intercept.

Short answer

17/1017/10. With xˉ=0\bar x=0 and yˉ=1\bar y=1, Sxy=7S_{xy}=7 and Sxx=10S_{xx}=10, so the slope is 0.70.7 and the intercept equals yˉ=1\bar y=1; together 1.71.7.
