Why the harmonic series diverges

Question

Does ∑n=1∞1n\displaystyle\sum_{n=1}^\infty\frac1n converge? Justify your answer.

Short answer

No, it diverges. Group terms in blocks 13+14\tfrac13+\tfrac14, 15+⋯+18\tfrac15+\dots+\tfrac18, and so on: each block exceeds 12\tfrac12, so partial sums grow without bound. Equivalently, the partial sums behave like ln⁡n\ln n, even though the terms tend to 00.
