Scaled integral of 1/(1+x^n) just above 1

Question

Let ε>0\varepsilon>0 be fixed. The limit lim⁡n→∞n∫11+εdx1+xn\lim_{n\to\infty} n\int_1^{1+\varepsilon}\frac{dx}{1+x^n} equals ln⁡k\ln k for some constant kk. Find kk.

Short answer

k=2k=2. Substitute x=et/nx=e^{t/n} so dx≈1net/ndtdx\approx \tfrac{1}{n}e^{t/n}dt; the integral becomes ∫0nln⁡(1+ε)et/n1+et dt→∫0∞dt1+et=ln⁡2\int_0^{n\ln(1+\varepsilon)}\frac{e^{t/n}}{1+e^{t}}\,dt\to\int_0^\infty\frac{dt}{1+e^t}=\ln 2, independent of ε\varepsilon.
