Recovering unknown entries from a matrix square

Question

A 3×33\times3 matrix AA has rows (1,x,−1)(1,x,-1), (2,−2,y)(2,-2,y) and (0,3,0)(0,3,0), where xx and yy are unknown. You are told that A2A^2 has rows (9,−7,11)(9,-7,11), (−2,21,−8)(-2,21,-8) and (6,−6,9)(6,-6,9). What is the product xyxy?

Short answer

1212. The (1,1)(1,1) entry of A2A^2 is 1+2x=91+2x=9, so x=4x=4. The (2,2)(2,2) entry is 2x+4+3y=212x+4+3y=21, so y=3y=3, and all other entries check out with x=4x=4, y=3y=3.
