Letter location after an unproductive mailbox check

Question

A letter is delivered to one of three mailboxes, numbered 11, 22, 33, each with probability 13\tfrac13. If it is in mailbox ii and you check that box, you notice it with probability i3\tfrac{i}{3}. You check mailbox 11 and find nothing. What is the probability the letter is in fact in mailbox 11?

Short answer

1/41/4. By Bayes: the letter is in box 11 and missed with probability 13⋅23=29\tfrac13\cdot\tfrac23=\tfrac29, and it is elsewhere with probability 23\tfrac23. Hence the posterior is 29÷(29+69)=14\tfrac29\div\left(\tfrac29+\tfrac69\right)=\tfrac14.
