Does shifting or rescaling change correlation
Question
Two random variables and have correlation . What is the correlation between and ? What is the correlation between and ?
Short answer
Both equal . Adding a constant changes neither the covariance nor the variance. Multiplying by scales the covariance by and the standard deviation by , which cancel; correlation is unchanged by any positive affine transformation (a negative multiplier would flip the sign).
