Correlation from the spread of a sum

Question

Random variables XX and YY have standard deviations 11 and 33, and X+YX+Y has standard deviation 44. What is the correlation between XX and YY?

Short answer

11. Expand Var⁡(X+Y)=Var⁡X+Var⁡Y+2ρ σXσY\operatorname{Var}(X+Y)=\operatorname{Var}X+\operatorname{Var}Y+2\rho\,\sigma_X\sigma_Y: 16=1+9+6ρ16=1+9+6\rho, so ρ=1\rho=1. Equivalently, standard deviations add only under perfect positive correlation.
