Correlation between counts of ones and fives

Question

A fair six-sided die is thrown nn times. Write XX for how many throws come up 11 and YY for how many throws come up 55. What is the correlation coefficient Corr(X,Y)\text{Corr}(X,Y)?

Short answer

−15-\tfrac15. Each count is Bin(n,16)\text{Bin}(n,\tfrac16) with variance 5n36\tfrac{5n}{36}. On a single throw the two indicators can't both be 1, so each throw contributes covariance −136-\tfrac1{36}, giving Cov(X,Y)=−n36\text{Cov}(X,Y)=-\tfrac{n}{36}. Dividing by 5n36\tfrac{5n}{36} gives −15-\tfrac15, independent of nn.
