Axioms that make a risk measure coherent

Question

What qualifies a risk measure as coherent? List the defining properties.

Short answer

A risk measure ρ\rho is coherent if it is monotone, subadditive, positively homogeneous and translation invariant. Monotone: a portfolio that is always worse has higher risk. Subadditive: ρ(X+Y)≤ρ(X)+ρ(Y)\rho(X+Y)\le\rho(X)+\rho(Y), so diversification never increases risk. Homogeneous: ρ(λX)=λρ(X)\rho(\lambda X)=\lambda\rho(X) for λ≥0\lambda\ge0. Translation invariant: adding cash cc lowers risk by cc. Expected shortfall is coherent; VaR fails subadditivity.
