Sum of binomial coefficients with both entries odd

Question

Let SS be the sum of (nk)\binom{n}{k} over all odd positive integers nn and kk not exceeding 10001000. Writing S=ab−cdS=\dfrac{a^b-c}{d} with integers a,b,c,da,b,c,d and bb as large as possible, find abcdabcd.

Short answer

60006000. For a fixed odd nn, the sum of (nk)\binom nk over odd kk is 2n−12^{n-1}, since half of all subsets have odd size. Summing over n=1,3,…,999n=1,3,\dots,999 gives ∑j=04994j=21000−13\sum_{j=0}^{499}4^j=\tfrac{2^{1000}-1}{3}, so with bb maximal (a,b,c,d)=(2,1000,1,3)(a,b,c,d)=(2,1000,1,3) and abcd=6000abcd=6000.
