Maximising the product of stack sizes from 100 coins

Question

You split 100100 coins into stacks of any sizes you like, and you are paid the product of the stack sizes (stacks of 2020, 2020 and 6060 would pay 2400024000). The best possible payout can be written as a⋅bca\cdot b^{c} with aa and bb coprime. What are aa, bb and cc?

Short answer

a=4a=4, b=3b=3, c=32c=32. Any part of size 55 or more should be split, since 2(k−2)>k2(k-2)>k for k≥5k\ge5, and a 44 is as good as 2+22+2. Threes beat twos (32>233^2>2^3), so use as many threes as possible; 100=32⋅3+4100=32\cdot3+4 gives the maximum 4⋅3324\cdot3^{32}.
