Mathematician aged x in the year x squared

Question

A famous logician who died in 18711871 liked to point out that in the calendar year x2x^2 his age was exactly xx. If nobody lives longer than 120120 years, find xx.

Short answer

x=43x=43. The year x2x^2 must lie between 17511751 and 18711871, so xx is 4242 or 4343. Being 4242 in 17641764 would mean a birth year of 17221722, too early to die in 18711871 within 120120 years, whereas 4343 in 18491849 means born in 18061806, which fits.
