Grilling four steaks on a three-steak grill
Question
Each side of a steak needs exactly one minute on the grill, and a steak is done only when both sides are cooked. Your grill fits at most three steaks at once. What is the shortest time in which four steaks can be fully cooked?
Short answer
3 minutes. There are sides to cook and at most per minute, so at least minutes are needed. Schedule: minute 1 cook side 1 of A, B, C; minute 2 cook side 2 of A, B and side 1 of D; minute 3 cook side 2 of C and D.
