Age from the fractions of a life

Question

An elderly man reviews his life: a quarter of it was boyhood, a fifth was youth, a third was manhood, and the last 1313 years have been old age. What is his age?

Short answer

60. The three stages make 14+15+13=4760\tfrac14+\tfrac15+\tfrac13=\tfrac{47}{60} of his life, so the 1313 years of old age are the remaining 1360\tfrac{13}{60}. Hence he is 6060 (boy 1515, youth 1212, man 2020, old age 1313).
