Adults at a concert before a bus arrives

Question

At a concert, exactly 512\tfrac{5}{12} of the audience are adults. A bus then drops off 5050 more people, after which exactly 1125\tfrac{11}{25} of the audience are adults. What is the smallest possible number of adults present before the bus came?

Short answer

125125. The initial crowd xx must be a multiple of 1212, and x+50x+50 a multiple of 2525, so xx is a multiple of 2525 too; the least is x=300x=300, giving 512⋅300=125\tfrac5{12}\cdot300=125 adults. This is feasible: afterwards there are 154154 adults out of 350350, so 2929 adults rode the bus.
