Eigenvalues of the cubed inverse of A minus 3I

Question

The eigenvalues of an n×nn\times n matrix AA are 55 and 77. Let B=((A−3In)−1)3.B=\left((A-3I_n)^{-1}\right)^{3}. Add up the distinct eigenvalues of BB.

Short answer

9/649/64. If Av=λvAv=\lambda v then Bv=(λ−3)−3vBv=(\lambda-3)^{-3}v, so the eigenvalues of BB are 2−3=182^{-3}=\tfrac18 and 4−3=1644^{-3}=\tfrac1{64}, whose sum is 964\tfrac{9}{64}.
